WHOIS COMMANDS
1. Domain Name Queries
Querying a domain name will return basic domain name information as well as its associated contacts and name servers. The [SERVER_NAME] is relative to the name space you want to query; please see list below. The [DOMAIN_NAME] is the domain name you want queried.
COMMAND: whois -h [SERVER_NAME] [DOMAIN_NAME]
EXAMPLE: whois -h coza-whois.registry.net.za mydomain.co.za
2. Nameserver Queries
Querying for a name server will return all the information pertaining to the name server queried. The [SERVER_NAME] is relative to the name space you want to query; please see list below. The [NAMESERVER_NAME] is the name or IP address of the name server you are looking to obtain information about.
COMMAND: whois -h [SERVER_NAME] [NAMESERVER_NAME]
EXAMPLE: whois -h coza-whois.registry.net.za ns1.mydomain.co.za

.DURBAN : whois.nic.durban
.JOBURG : whois.nic.joburg
SLD's
.WEB.ZA : web-whois.registry.net.za
.ORG.ZA : org-whois.registry.net.za
.NET.ZA : net-whois.registry.net.za
.CO.ZA : coza-whois.registry.net.za
.AFRICA : whois.nic.africa
Alternatively, should you wish to do a direct registrar whois then you can use whois.proxy.net.za how ever we recommend the first option as it contains all the registry information.
